DIRECTOR

David Berthold is one of Australia’s most prominent theatre directors and cultural leaders. As a theatre director, he has directed for most of Australia’s major theatres companies. As an Artistic Director, he has led transformational change at several significant arts organisations. He was Artistic Director of Brisbane Festival (2015-19), Artistic Director and CEO of La Boite Theatre Company (2008-14), Artistic Director and CEO of Griffin Theatre Company (2003-2006), Artistic Director and CEO of the Australian Theatre for Young People (1999-2003), Associate Director for Sydney Theatre Company (1994-99), and Director for Centre of Creative Practices at NIDA. He was also Festival Director for World Interplay in 2007, the world’s largest festival of young playwrights. He is currently the Executive Chairperson for Playwriting Australia, is a Trustee of the Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award, a member of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Advisors’ Group, a member of the Theatre Panel, Helpmann Awards, and recently sat on the QUT Creative Industries Faculty Advisory Committee.

David’s productions include: Rolling Thunder Vietnam; Much Ado About Nothing (NIDA); Multiple collaborations with Tommy Murphy including his multi-award winning adaptation of Timothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding the Man,  Saturn’s Return (Sydney Theatre Company), and more recently Mark Colvin’s Kidney (Belvoir St Theatre); the premiere of Louis Nowra’s Boyce Trilogy (Griffin Theatre Company); Debra Oswald’s The Peach Season (Griffin Theatre Company); and Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things (NIDA).
